Inhalt:
Milton, the blind, Puritan prophet, is considered one of the greatest poets of the English language because he tells us so fully what it is to be human. The main work of this course will be a reading of Paradise Lost (1668), Milton’s great epic rendering of the story of the Fall in Genesis. We will track the “origins” of this great poet’s greatest work in Ovidian myth, the Hebrew scriptures, Classical epic, and Renaissance humanism as well as in the history of the British seventeenth century. Milton’s career spanned the most turbulent political period in England: the spectacular excesses of King Charles I and the Stuart court led to a brutal civil war, a revolutionary republic headed by Oliver Cromwell, a government in which John Milton played a key role, and, finally, the beheading of the King in 1649. The monarchy was Restored in 1660 under Charles II, but its power would never be the same. Milton's work has attracted many of the greatest literary critics. Alongside our reading of Milton we will chart the history of interpretation of his poetry and thought, considering psychoanalytical, new historicist, biblical-typological, feminist and new critical readings of Milton by such critics as William Empson, Northrop Frye, Harold Bloom, Stanley Fish, Angus Fletcher, Mary Nyquist, Patricia Parker, and Regina Schwartz.
