Inhalt:
This class will serve as an introduction to Cognitive Linguistics, an approach which claims that the use of language can only be explained with reference to underlying mental processes and shared cultural patterns. In the class we will focus on metaphor, metonomy, irony, and sarcasm – all of them key topics in Cognitive Linguistics.
In Cognitive Linguistics, both metaphor (and metonymy) are no longer considered just as a matter of words (preferably restricted to poetic texts) but as basic tools used in the conceptualization of our everyday lives. Metaphor is seen as crucially involving the mapping of concepts across two conceptual domains (such as from space to time in “the time will come”), and metonymy is considered a cognitive process where one conceptual entity provides access to another within the same conceptual domain (“lend me your ear”). Verbal irony and sarcasm on the other hand occur when speakers say something that seems to be the opposite or at least something different of what they mean (a soccer player shouting “Great!” when he has just missed the goal in a penalty).
The seminar will thus introduce participants to major conceptualizations of Cognitive Linguistics and to current trends in metaphor, metonymy, and irony research, including the study of multimodal, i.e. visual  metaphor), subscribing to the fundamentally interdisciplinary approach typical of Cognitive Semantics. In adddition we will also direct our attention to the potential that the approach has for teaching purposes.
