Inhalt: Cultural linguistics is a relatively novel research paradigm that systematically investigates the relationship between language and culture. Culturally based linguistic research involves topics such as language and gender, language and identity or language and (cultural) memory transmission (to name just a few points of interest). However, Cultural Linguistics goes beyond a mere discussion of these topics by drawing on insights gained from linguistic research and thereby arriving at a linguistically informed assessment of topics relevant to cultural studies. In this regard, Cultural Linguistics follows the so-called cultural turn of the 1970s/1980s similarly to other philologies (e.g., literary studies). This lecture will explore key issues of Cultural Linguistics illuminating the specificity of the cultural linguistic approach as well as its interfaces with neighboring subdisciplines such as Applied Linguistics, pragmatics or sociolinguistics.
