Inhalt: This course will provide an introduction to concepts of gender and ethnicity in American Literature from the mid-nineteenth to the twenty-first century. We will discuss a number of texts including Philip Roth’s THE HUMAN STAIN, David Henry Hwang’s M BUTTERFLY, Harriet Jacobs’ INCIDENTS IN THE LIFE OF A SLAVE GIRL in order to uncover a variety of images concerning literary gender and ethnic identities. The main goal of this course is to familiarize students with representations of these socially constructed identities and to analyze their significance in American literature.
