Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: This course serves as an introduction to the genre of autobiography through the lens of slave narratives. We will survey texts from the late 18th century, the slave narrative’s heyday in the 19th century, and its continuation in so-called neo-slave narratives in the 21st century. We will look at autobiography as a form of life writing, and how slave narratives challenge the contours and conventions of this narrative form. The course alternates iconic key texts with lesser known examples, and features close readings, theoretical contextualization, and plenary discussion. In addition to the primary texts, further material will be made available online. Students must come to class prepared as this course is based on active participation and their critical engagement with the readings.
Empfohlene Literatur: For a start, please read the following texts before the semester begins: Equiano, Olaudah. The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African. 1789. (We will read this text in excerpts which will be made available to you.) Douglass, Frederick. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. 1845.
