Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
In this seminar, we will address the roles of translators and interpreters as mediators in Anglophone film and prose. Conflict and disaster are themes that the selected texts share, foregrounding the necessity and urgency of mediation. The fictional figures and figurations of these texts will be brought into dialogue with theoretical considerations of the roles, at the varying levels of text (i.e. the characters of translators and mediators in the fictional worlds of the text, but also ‘pseudotranslation’ of entire texts).

Students are required to read the texts below. The film The Interpreter (dir. Sydney Pollack) will be shown in class.

In order to obtain credit for this class, students will be required to attend class regularly, participate in discussion (the opportunity to write minutes to supplement this component will be provided), give an oral presentation, submit an ‘ideas abstract’ for discussion at the end of the semester, and write a term paper (4,500-5,000 words, due 04.03.2015).
