Inhalt:
Jon Elster is one of the most renowned, and most interesting, European political theorists.
He has acquired international fame for his books about methodological issues in the social sciences and about the role of rationality (e. g., "Nuts and Bolts for the Social Sciences", "Ulysses and the Sirens", "Sour Grapes", "Alchemies of the Mind", ...), but he has also written on "Political Sociology", on Marx and Tocqueville, on deliberative democracy, on "Local Justice", etc.
His latest book brings together insights from all these fields in order to explore questions democrats of all ages have tried to find answers to: How should public institutions be designed in order to protect optimally against the abuse of public power? What can we do, by way of institutional design, to prevent bad decision-making? And what does "bad decision-making" mean, in the first place?
By reading and discussing this book, participants will get an extensive introduction to the normative theory of democracy from a European perspective.
