Inhalt: This course will explore the movement and development of 21st-century Black poetry with an eye to the innovative aesthetics of contemporary Black poets from across the globe. We will focus on poetry and poetics specifically, but we will also consider the emergence of this work in the midst of the contemporary racial climate. With the goal of understanding the aesthetic, cultural, and critical legacies, we will explore timelines and trajectories of Black poetry in the Americas, Africa, and Europe while delving into the works of several critically acclaimed poets. In doing so, we will examine the role that race, cultural identity, and poetic forms have played in shaping and reshaping global Black poetry, particularly in the twenty-first century.
