Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
This module seeks to engage students in a critical and analytical look at crucial themes in America's domestic development from the Progressive Era to the end of the Cold War. It offers a diversity of perspectives and will equip students with the basic historical tools for more detailed investigation. Particular emphasis will be put on the impact of war on society, the growth of the state, economic change, social movements, cultural transformations, and political realignments. Among the key themes to be discussed are the emergence of modernity, including urbanization, secularization, technology, and new media; the rise of both cultural pluralism and reactionary modernism; the transition from producer to consumer capitalism; the rise of big business and “big labor”; state-building and the politics of economic growth; the shift from an industrial to a postindustrial economy; and the changes in gender and race relations.
