Inhalt: In this class, students will explore how American drama has responded to changing conceptualizations of racial and ethnic identities over the last two decades. Studying plays written mostly by African American authors, students will be introduced to how individual plays have addressed, questioned and/or refuted the notion of racial difference. We will read the plays of such recent authors as August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks and others in order to examine the theatrical strategies that inform dramatic representations of racial identities. By also looking at individual stage productions, students will assess and discuss how recent American theatre and drama underlines the performative dimension of racial differences.
Empfohlene Literatur: Please purchase copies of the following plays before the beginning of the semester: August Wilson, Radio Golf August Wilson, Gem of the Ocean Suzan-Lori Parks, Topdog/Underdog Suzan-Lori Parks, Venus David Mamet, Race Ayad Akthar, Disgraced Additional readings will be made available during the first week of class.
