Inhalt: This seminar will challenge various prescriptive claims reiterated in school grammars and style handbooks. For example, prescriptivists proscribe the usage of split infinitives, i.e. the insertion of elements between the infinitive marker to and the verb. In their view, then, the Star Trek catchphrase "to boldly go where no man has gone before" should be reformulated as "to go boldly where no man has gone before" or "boldly to go...", thus avoiding the abhorred split infinitive. Taking a descriptivist stance and using corpus-based methodologies, we will see whether such claims can stand the test of data.
