Inhalt:
This course will survey the history and present state of English in the Americas from Canada and U.S. American Englishes, to the many forms of English in the Caribbean and in Mesoamerica.
Cast in the framework of recent research on Postcolonial Englishes, its special focus will be on (re-)definitions of identity, the nativization of language structures, the emergence of new norms, the development of new and not-so-new (regional and ethnically-based) varieties such as African-American Vernacular English, Latino Englishes, and, finally, on Creolization and Decreolization processes within American Englishes.
