Inhalt: The past two decades have seen a significant increase in film as well as theatre audiences' interest in productions advertised as "based on a true story". This class proposes to look at our obsession with factuality by re-evaluating the uses of fiction on the one hand and examining the extremely contrived nature of all ostensibly authentic texts on the other. This will not only involve close analysis of at least five full-length plays but a significant amount of theoretical consideration and discussion.
Empfohlene Literatur: Texts Introductory reading: Juli Zeh's essay on the question of authenticity in literature (make absolutely sure to have read this by and to bring it to our session in the second week of term): http://www.zeit.de/2006/39/L-Literatur Main Texts: William Shakespeare, Antony and Cleopatra* Lee Hall, The Pitmen Painters+ Gregory Burke, Black Watch# Keith Waterhouse, Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell# Gillian Slovo, The Riots+ * In case you are interested in augmenting your reading with a modern interpretation, I'd recommend this: http://www.staatstheater-mainz.com/web/veranstaltungen/schauspiel/antonius-und-cleopatra It's free, you know ... +Make sure you get hold of a copy of these plays! # These plays will be made available after the beginning of term.
Zusätzliche Informationen: There will be three quizzes on the plays marked * and +. Students will have to score above 50% in these quizzes in order to pass. All papers written in the context of this class will have to deal either with considerations genre (eg history play, docudrama, memory play) or questions of authenticity and will have to be based on at least one of the plays discussed in class.
