Inhalt:
The concept of information structure is commonly used in linguistics to refer to the ways speakers and writers use linguistic structures to organize information in (written) text and (spoken) discourse, foregrounding some elements while backgrounding others. In cognitive terms, this involves differentially guiding hearers’ and readers’ attention (observing a general principle of importance or relevance, perhaps).
The principles of information structure are to a large extent language-specific; and since they form part of a native speaker’s linguistic knowledge, it may be expected that the competence levels of advanced learners and native speakers will substantially differ. Thus, the perspective taken in this class will be both contrastive and focused on the needs of (advanced) learners of English. After sorting out the major concepts needed for empirical work (e.g., basic word-order, given-new information, topic-focus, contrastiveness, foregrounding and backgrounding) we will selectively study means available in English and contrast them with German: Emphatic do, focus particles (e.g., only, really), inversion (On board were two nurses), preposing (This one she accepted) and postposing (I made without delay all the changes you wanted), cleft constructions (It was you who broke it; What he did was crash my car), extraposition (It is clear that he is guilty), right and left dislocation (They are still here, the people from nextdoor, That money I gave her, it must have disappeared, and the passive construction (be- and get-passive).
