Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Following the tradition of naming geological time periods after changes in the stratosphere and the work of ecologist Eugene F. Stoermer and chemist Paul Crutzen, the anthropocene has been proposed as a name for the current epoch. “anthropo-”, from the Greek meaning human, thus suggests that we are living in an age where humans are making a lasting mark on the earth. Drawing on developments in the environmental humanities--with glances to the history of industrialisation, to globalisation and uneven development, as well as to waste--this seminar will be an intensive (and hopefully rewarding) introduction to this idea. A reader will be provided at the beginning of semester. In order to obtain credit, students will be required to participate in class, lead discussion and present an essay, as well as a larger written assignment 4 weeks after the end of semester.
