Inhalt:
Is the comparative of monosyllabic adjectives such as proud always synthetic (prouder), or is it also possible to use analytic forms (more proud)? If so, what exactly influences the language users' choice?

How frequent are split infinitives, i.e. how often do we find intervening elements between the infinitive marker to and the corresponding verb (a practice that is heavily criticized by prescriptive grammarians)?

How productive is the derivational suffix -ish? Originally related to German -isch (cf. kindisch vs. childish), it has gradually extended its range of application as the following examples illustrate: sixty-ish, six o' clock-ish, Don't be so Do-it-yourself-ish, etc.

Questions such as these, which are of particular interest to future teachers of English, can be best explored by conducting a corpus research, i.e. by taking into account a large amount of linguistic data that is digitally availabe. This seminar will provide a thorough introduction to corpus-linguistic methodologies that can be applied to investigate a wide array of topics, both synchronic and diachronic.
