Inhalt: While some effects of 'English going global' have been widely discussed, with the focus being on the development of a world lingua franca English threatening local identities ('English as a killer language'), the resulting linguistic commonalities and differences across varieties have only recently come into view. On the one hand, so-called Angloversals (a blend of Anglophone and universal) are being studied (as can be witnessed by having a look at the recent Electronic World Atlas of Varieties of English): joint trends observable in the course of the emergence of postcolonial Englishes. On the other hand, we observe strong localization tendencies leading to the development of many new varieties of English (World Englishes). And, on top of that, English is obtaining transnational identities by means of transcultural flow of commodities. The lecture will trace the history of global English, present top candidates for the status of Angloversal, and, above all, give a survey of global Postcolonial English today, including a glimpse of some lesser-known varieties.
