Inhalt: This lecture course deals with the early history of the English novel, covering the period from the late 16th to the late 18th century, as well as with the theory of this particular aspect of English literary history. Ian Watt's seminal study The Rise of the Novel (1957), which continues to shape our view of the novel's emergence, will be one of our points of reference, but not the only one, and by the end of the semester you will have a differentiated view of how scholars have explained the existence of the novel of the genre. After a theoretical section, the lecture will cover a variety of illustrative literary examples revealing the scope of early forms of novel writing. You will be introduced to both familiar authors and their work - such as Defoe, Fielding and Richardson - to (still) lesser known but no less important authors - such as Nashe, Bunyan and Haywood.
Empfohlene Literatur: Terry Eagleton, The English Novel: An Introduction. Brean Hammond and Shaun Regan, Making the Novel. Jane Spencer, The Rise of the Woman Novelist. Ian Watt, The Rise of the Novel.
