Kursleitung: Dr. Silke Stroh

Inhalt:
This seminar explores the culture(s) of the anglophone Caribbean through a wide variety of cultural productions (e.g. literature, music, film, advertising) and discusses these in relation to their socio-historical contexts and key theoretical debates from a range of fields. We will consider cultural representations from different social groups within the region itself, as well as international images produced by visiting colonisers, travellers and the tourism industry, popular culture and the modern Caribbean diaspora. Students will analyse various processes of intercultural encounter, communication, conflict and mediation; engage critically with cultural perceptions and stereotypes; and gain an in-depth understanding of the complex aesthetic and social interrelations which characterise modern Caribbean culture and its position within global frameworks. Pertinent themes include colonialism and postcolonialism, ethnic and national identity, language, creolisation, hybridity, transculturalism, migration, gender, and cultural memory.

Texts:
All students are required to study a range of shorter set texts (e.g. short stories, short poems, and excerpts from longer texts like novels, long poems, or book-length historical / theoretical studies / travel reports) and images. These shorter materials will be made available in a reader on JGU Reader.
Moreover, all students will be asked to watch a film (Perry Henzell’s The Harder They Come, 1972) and read two seminal novels in their entirety. The novels are:
• George Lamming, In the Castle of My Skin (1953). Repr. Ann Arbor: U of Michigan P 1991. All students should provide themselves with a copy of this book.
• Ramabai Espinet, The Swinging Bridge. Harmondsworth et al.: Penguin 2003. / New York: HarperCollins 2003. Out of print but still available as an e-book or (in print) through antiquarian booksellers. There will also be a print copy made available in the Semesterapparat.
In addition to these set texts shared by all the class, students who do presentations will be required to do extra reading specific to their subject; this could again comprise a range of shorter texts and/or one additional book (e.g. a third novel).
