In this course, we will look at English Literature from the late 16th to the 21st century. Periods of literary history, questions of genre, and literary analysis will be dealt with. We will read five longer texts: Shakespeare's comedy Twelfth Night (1602), Jane Austen's parody of a Gothic novel, Northanger Abbey (1818), R L. Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), C.S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (1950), and finally, Tom Stoppard's popular dramatic piece Arcadia (1993). In addition, we will look at a number of shorter texts by various authors (e.g. John Donne, Alexander Pope, Lord Byron, Virginia Woolf, Tony Harrison, and others). You must be prepared to do a fair amount of reading.
Please make sure that you obtain academic editions of the longer texts. You will have to read them all.
