Inhalt: This course on the sonnets will trace the rich history of the sonnet from its origin in Italy, follow how this compact and disciplined poetic form was taken up and developed in the English language in the Early Modern period and explore how it spread and diversified right up to modern times and, by studying many examples across the centuries, we will examine the continuing appeal of the sonnet and the sonnet cycles.
