Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Poetry was the predominant form of literary expression in the colonial era. This proseminar will introduce the variety of colonial poetry—mainly in English—from early settlement through the immediate postcolonial period. We will discuss writers from Thomas Morton to Philip Freneau, including such seminal figures as Anne Bradstreet, Edward Taylor, and Phillis Wheatley, but also less well-known authors such as Francis Pastorius. The seminar will aim at introducing students both to the ways of reading poetry in general as well as to the particular poetic forms and interests that concerned people in the English colonies of North America.
