Inhalt: “We are not making a coalition of states, we are uniting people.” Jean Monnet's dictum touches upon one of the central problems facing the EU today: A further deepening and widening of EU integration seems impossible without broad public support by citizens in the member states. This also implies a sense of community among Europeans - a collective European identity - that fosters loyalty and solidarity with fellow Europeans, even in the face of unequal costs and benefits or redistribution from rich to poor member states. The ongoing controversy over financial aids for debt-ridden member states makes the need for a pan-European feeling of belonging together in times of crisis only all too clear. The seminar covers the current state of research on EU support and a collective European identity. In the first part of the seminar, we will discuss the theoretical and institutional bases of the political system of the EU and democracy at the European level. This will also include a review of the concepts of political support, political community, and collective identity. In the second part of the seminar, we will critically discuss current empirical research on public opinion towards the EU and European identity.
