Inhalt: This seminar, which sees itself as an introduction to contemporary British drama, will consider four highly successful plays dating from the years between 1997 and 2009. All four plays have one common denominator: they are at least partly set in a public space of sociability and food /drink consumption: a hotel, a pub, a restaurant. Apart from that, they vary in style, ranging from black comedy (Bean) to chilling story (McPherson). We will analyse the plays as literary texts but will also deal with issues such as gender, ethnicity, identity, and space. Moreover, we will look at the contexts of the productions, at their reception, and at London's theatrical scene. Please make sure that you have read Michael Frayn's Crimson Hotel by the second week.
Empfohlene Literatur: - Michael Frayn, The Crimson Hotel and Audience (London: Methuen, 2007). - Conor McPherson, The Weir (London: Nick Hern Books, 1998). - Richard Bean, Pub Quiz is Life (London: Oberon Books, 2009). - Kwame Kwei-Armah, Elmina's Kitchen (London: Methuen, 2003).
