Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: This course is highly recommended for first-year students (ideally to be taken before the proseminar). Course requirements: regular attendance, active participation in discussions and group work including short presentations in class.
Inhalt: In this course you will be introduced to first the tools you will need to do research and write papers in the field of North American Studies. This includes a tour of our library and an introduction to literary databases, to doing cultural, historical and literary research on the internet, to the Modern Language Association system of referencing and to basic guidelines in writing academic papers. In the second part of the class we will read and analyze key texts from the field of North American Studies. We will trace its historical development, describe key concepts and apply our insights to contemporary developments in North American society, culture, politics, and literature.
