Inhalt: At first glance, the histories of Germany and Britain could not be more different in the two decades after the First World War. The Weimar Republic was born in civil unrest and remained beset by acute economic crisis, political division and nationalist resentments, being ultimately superseded by a totalitarian dictatorship. Britain experienced chronic economic problems and social conflicts, but its moderate liberal-democratic order seems, by comparison, an island of political stability in this period. However, on the level of gender discourses some striking similarities are apparent between these two countries, from debates about ‘the modern woman’ to the undermining of traditional masculine ideals by the impact of the war, economic change and the increasing empowerment of women. In this course we will explore both similarities in and differences between British and German society from a gender perspective and consider topics such as work, family, sexuality, media and leisure. Students who wish to take part in this course should have a good command of English. A short presentation will be mandatory.
