Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: This course is designed as an introduction to and a survey of American poetry and poetics. We will read a wide variety of poems and will trace the development of American poetry from colonial religious poetry to an array of twentieth century poetry. Poets to be discussed will include, amongst others, colonial writers Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor, nineteenth century poets Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman, modernists poets such as T.S. Eliot, H.D., and William Carlos Williams, poets of the Harlem Renaissance (Langston Hughes), the Beat Poets (Ginsberg). We will also focus on twentieth century poetry by female poets such as Sylvia Plath, Elizabeth Bishop, and Adrienne Rich. Discussions will pay attention to changing conceptions of what poetry is and what is does and on the way texts have responded to and interacted with their particular social and cultural situations. We will also pay attention to poetic forms and poetic traditions. How do poets write out of and against poetic traditions? This course requires weekly reading and you will be expected to participate in class discussions and group work activities.
