Inhalt: “The Romantics” did not refer to themselves by this term, and neither would the majority of them have conceived of themselves as part of a unified and coherent “movement”. It is a retrospective label and one that comprises a vast diversity of people. In order to get to the bottom of what we mean when we use the words “Romantic/romantic” or “Romanticism” (certainly not, “Well it’s got something to do with love and nature…”), we will attempt to trace characteristics of Romantic texts in various genres and contexts. This much may be said in advance: the Romantic mind-set is riddled with internal tensions; the Romantic age is fundamentally characterised by the revolutionary buzz that spread to England after the French Revolution in 1789. At the same time, and on the surface in contrast to this interest in the social, a new emphasis on humans’ subjective role in perceiving the world – sometimes to the point of solipsism – can be perceived in many of their texts. In this class we will approach our subjects through a varied range of teaching/learning methods for most of which a willingness on your part to participate and actively engage is necessary. In our treatment of a large variety of different types and styles of text we will aim to strike a balance between thorough close readings – in order to develop critical and analytical skills that are indispensable for studying literature – and the placement of texts within their relevant literary, historical, philosophical and social contexts.
