Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
This course is highly recommended for first-year students (ideally to be taken before the proseminar).

Inhalt:
“[w]ether defined spatially, politically, or symbolically, the ‘America’ that American studies scholars aim to understand is itself an elusive target.” (Horwitz, Richard P. “American Studies: Approaches and Concepts”)

This course will study North America’s (with a focus on the United States) past and present in the light of conceptualizations of “America” and “Americanness” as well as with regard to America’s commitment to key concepts and values such as individual freedom, exceptionalism, republicanism etc.
Together we will read and analyze key historical and literary texts and place them in their historical and cultural context. We will then apply our insights from these texts to contemporary developments in North American society, culture, politics, and literature. A preliminary syllabus – which, however, is explicitly open to suggestions according to the participants’ interests – will be provided in the first meeting.
