Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
In this class, we will basically adopt a ‘learning by doing’ method to empirical research. To obtain credit, participants are required to carry out their own small-scale (group) research on an aspect of free choice, focusing on characteristics of the grammar of conversation, using authentic data of native speaker’s interaction and present their initial findings (via PowerPoint or poster) in class, which will then be their exploratory work for their term papers.

A brief glance at dialogs in current teaching materials will even strike the linguistic layperson as odd -- they sound artificial, lacking almost any of the major features of authentic interactive communicative settings: Discourse markers, back-channeling, hesitations, restarts, interruptions, repeats, pauses, co-construction -- just to name a few, ‘flooding’ any normal conversation:
Well, we went to, we went to San Francisco because I remember, uh, uh, oh, what the heck’s the name of that hotel we stayed? Big hotel. Mm. Oh, anyway, uh, but we just stayed there a couple of nights and that’s all, and then we took the bus back, of course.
This (research) seminar will critically survey and discuss the current state and representation of spoken language in EFL text books with respect to the requirements advanced in the European Reference Frame and the Curricula, all promoting the necessity of exposing the learner to authentic language. After a solid overview of the state of the art of an English ‘grammar of conversation,’ acknowledging the production circumstances of spoken language, i.e., the various performance phenomena of oral face-to-face interactions, we will, from an informed linguistic point of view, analyze and assess conversational units in selected teaching materials in an attempt to work out, based on the participants’ findings, a more authentic suggestion. In this respect, the seminar may well end up in collaboratively designing a model unit that may be offered in an English as a Foreign Language classroom project.
