Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
Inhalt: Cities are condensed and contested sites. Cosmopolitan ideals of mutual respect and transgression of racial / social differences can be played out against this vibrant backdrop, or revelled in as they explode in violent eruptions of the city-as-moloch. Utopian projects might be planned or penned one block down from dystopian despair. This seminar – for advanced BA students – will focus on fictions of the city written in English, encompassing a geographical range from Canada to India, and the US to the UK, in novels written in the last 100 years. These fictions will be contextualised by way of a reader (which will be provided on ILIAS), with readings on cultural geography, cosmopolitan theories, narratology, and postcolonialism. In order to obtain credit for this seminar, students will be required to participate in discussions and in group/preparation activities, to give a presentation, to submit an abstract and a final term paper (approx. 4,000 words long, due 4 weeks after the end of semester).
