Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Loneliness and isolation are common topics in American literature. The actual or perceived separation from other human beings, however, is not always described in the same way, and the experience can range from a feeling of alienation to the discovery of liberating independence. Whether experienced in positive or negative terms, loneliness and isolation usually deeply affect the protagonists of literary works, and their perception of and attitude to this experience often reveals not only their world view but also that of their authors. In this proseminar, we are going to discuss a selection of short stories, novels, plays, and movies dealing with the various forms of loneliness and isolation in American literature and culture. Our reading list will include texts written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, Herman Melville, Sarah Orne Jewett, Susan Glaspell, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, and Jonathan Safran Foer.
