Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Local color writing came into prominence after the Civil War and reflects the transition of U.S. literature from romanticism to realism. The local color story, the preferred narrative form, is concerned with commonplace scenes and the careful presentation of characters, local customs, speech peculiarities, and sectional occupations and interests, thus recapturing the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural traditions of 19th-century America. The proseminar wants to make students familiar with the characteristics of 19th-century local color writing and will also serve as an introduction to the methods of short story explication. Stories of the following authors and regions will be chosen for analysis: New England: S.O.Jewett, M.W.Freeman, H.B.Stowe; South: G.W.Cable, J.Ch.Harris, K.Chopin; Midwest: H.Garland; West: B.Harte. As the texts are scattered in various anthologies, a photocopied collection will be provided.
