Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
All students will have to provide regular proof that they have read all relevant texts. Those needing to write a seminar paper will identify a Hamlet-related text NOT discussed in our class and write about its relation to the parent text. A list of Hamlet adaptations to base papers on will be provided for the benefit of the uninspired.

Please volunteer by e-mail (patrick.gill@uni-mainz.de) for one of the following presentation formats (2-3 students per presentation):
Graded presentations (alte PO) will consist of topics a) to i) (see below). Active participation (neue PO) will consist of students taking on the role of experts for the discussion of particular adaptations without giving a formal presentation (I to VII below).

Inhalt:

After introducing participants to Shakespeare's famous tragedy and its lesser-known precursors, this class will turn to modern adaptations of the Danish prince's story. As we will discuss novels as well as plays, considerations of genre will no doubt feature rather prominently, as will an investigation of the critical terminology of intertextuality.

Empfohlene Literatur:
OBLIGATORY INTRODUCTORY READING:

Thomas Michael Stein. "Fictionalizing Shakespeare Today: Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres, Marina Warner's Indigo and Ian McEwan's Amsterdam". History and Drama: Essays in Honour of Bernhard Reitz. Ed. Sigrid Rieuwerts. MUSE 9. Trier: WVT, 2006. 296-304.*

COURSE TEXTS (equally obligatory):

William Shakespeare, Hamlet
John Updike, Gertrude and Claudius
Graham Swift, Ever After
Sulayman Al-Bassam, The Al-Hamlet Summit*
Margaret Atwood, "Gertrude Talks Back"*
Salman Rushdie, "Yorick"*

In the case of Shakespeare's Hamlet, only a critically annotated edition (New Cambridge or Arden) will be deemed acceptable! As far as the novels by Updike and Swift are concerned, I am much more tolerant - pick any edition you like. Texts marked with an asterisk can be picked up in the form of a master copy from Frau Wächter's office (01-577).
