Inhalt:
This class will give an introduction to Cognitive Semantics, an approach to the study of meaning in language which claims that the use of language can only be explained with reference to underlying mental processes and shared cultural patterns. It will do so by looking at three concepts characaterized by the fact that what you say is not what you mean: metaphor, metonymy, and verbal irony.
In Cognitive Semantics metaphor and metonomy are not considered a matter of words but as basic tools used in the conceptualization of everyday lives. Metaphor is seen as crucially involving the mapping of concepts across two cognitive domains (such as from space to time in the time will come, my young days have gone …). Metonymy, on the other hand, is seen as involving cognitive processes where one entity provides salient access to another from the same cognitive domain (the ham sandwhich wants to pay …). Verbal irony occurs when speakers say something that appears to be the opposite of what they actually mean (a soccer player shouting Great! when he has just failed to score a goal …).
The seminar will thus introduce participants to current trends in cognitive metaphor, metonomy, and irony research, including the study of so-called mutimodal metaphors (visual and gestural metaphors).
