Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: This course involves an authentic language-pedagogy project in which we will be creating a course in "embodied English" for THW volunteers who will be going off to save lives in disaster situations around the world. On the basis of a language acquisition methodology developed at the FTSK over the past ten years, we will be creating a course that involves complete, naturalistic immersion in the foreign language so that basic vocabulary and essential expressions can be learned within a short period of time that will allow rescue workers to complete their tasks in a foreign setting while working with non-speakers of German. The pilot course we create will be run at the THW training center in Stuttgart immediately after this course. On the basis of the effectiveness of the course we run this month, the THW will decide whether or not to fund the further development of courses of this type in several languages, which will be used to introduce THW volunteers to different foreign languages within a short period of time. This will NOT be a conventional "taught" course. The group will be working as an interactive and increasingly autonomous team to create the intensive English course on the basis of data collected in earlier courses using this methodology at the FTSK as well as literature from the field of foreign language teaching. Participants in the course will be expected: - to have read the entire coursebook distributed by the instructor BEFORE the first day of class (24 September) - to attend ALL sessions of the course to be held from 24-27 September at the FTSK (9:00-15:00) - to participate in a very proactive and collaborative manner in all aspects of course development - to create and submit one distinct section of a course handbook by 9:00 a.m. on 28 September. This handbook will be used by the student teachers in the implementation of the first intensive course at the THW training center. - to assess their own learning at the end of the course Assessment will be based on 1) each student's personal contribution to the overall success of the project as determined by the instructor and the student (50%), and 2) participation, contributions, effort and attitude throughout the course, as determined by the instructor. N.B. This course was announced for several weeks in June, 2012 and all of those who expressed interest at the time have been included in the course, which will take place from 24-28 September. It is no longer possible to sign up for this course.
