Kontingentschema: MA Linguistik
Inhalt: The seminar deals with typological variation in voice (or, broader, diathetic or valency) alternations, like passive, causative and applicative. The students will be requested to extract and analyze data on voice and valency alternations from secondary sources (mostly, published grammars), thus gaining insight into basics of typological work. Alternatively, selected papers dealing with voice phenomena cross-linguistically, or voice systems in lesser-known (“exotic”) languages, may serve as basis for student presentations. In order to get credits, students are expected to make a seminar presentation as well as write a paper (Hausarbeit) on the topic of voice alternations in individual languages.
