Inhalt: This course will survey the history and present state of English in the Americas from Canada, U.S. American Englishes, to the many forms of English in the Caribbean. Cast in the framework of recent research on Postcolonial Englishes, its special concern will be (re-)definitions of identity, the nativization of language structures, the emergence of new norms, the development of new and not-so-new (regional and ethnically-based) varieties such as African-American Vernacular English, Latino Englishes, and on Creolization and Decreolization processes within American Englishes. Practical work will focus on how American Englishes are (mis)represented in Wikipedia entries and on a special website 'Do You Speak American?' (http://www.pbs.org/speak) and in a Video program 'The Adventure of English: English in America'. Depending on the commitment of participants, we might embark on constructing selected potential Wikis on American Englishes for the term paper. Study material will be available from my website http://guenther.lampert-mainz.de Details of organization during first meeting.
