Inhalt:
Ludwig Leichhardt (1813-1848?) was a German explorer who, like Humboldt, understood himself as a broadly educated scientist, discovering ‘new worlds’ and who, like the legendary Burke & Wills, lost his way and died in the Australian Outback. It is a fascinating story of a man between two cultures, struggling between the dreams of his European childhood on the one hand and the realities of the Australian continent on the other. This seminar takes H.W. Finger’s Leichhardt biography as the material for a translation from German into English. Co-taught by Jr. Prof. Kylie Crane and Prof. Dr. Silvia Hansen-Schirra, students can opt to take the seminar as a Literary/Cultural Studies (KW) or Translation/Linguistics Studies (STW) class OR BOTH at Hauptseminar level.*

The class will commence with a brief introduction to the historical and cultural backgrounds of the biography. This will be complemented by a practically oriented introduction to the tools and techniques of translation. The bulk of the work in this seminar will involve (literary) translation practice. Students will be involved in the processes of translation in group work in a hands-on approach which will involve work throughout the semester, in addition to and sometimes instead of attending class. The translation will result in a book publication afterwards. Each group will be responsible for the translation of an excerpt from the text as well as an oral presentation during the semester. In order to qualify for credit points, each student will also be required to submit an additional assignment as outlined below.

The Literary/Cultural Studies component will entail active participation in class and a solid contribution to the translation work groups, as well as an oral presentation of the group’s work and the completion of a 4000-5000 word assignment with a literary or cultural studies approach that complements the translation. This assignment is to be submitted to Jr. Prof. Crane.

The Translation/Linguistic Studies component will entail active participation in class and a solid contribution to the translation work groups, as well as an oral presentation of the group’s work and the completion of a 4000-5000 word assignment with a linguistic or translational approach that complements the translation. This assignment is to be submitted to Prof. Hansen-Schirra.

* Students who wish to qualify for both KW and STW credits must enrol in both classes on Jogustine in order to facilitate examination procedures. Such students will be involved in one group work project, but required to submit a complementary essay on topics from each of directions (i.e. to both Jr. Prof. Crane and to Prof. Hansen-Schirra).
