Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Monasticism and Asceticism in Egypt The seminar will be taught in English and the majority of secondary readings will be in English. Student discussion and written assignments can be done in German. Knowledge of Greek and a willingness to pursue short translation tasks on the original texts is required.
Inhalt: This seminar will explore the range of social structures, textual practices, and ideologies which were found in Egypt between the 2nd and 4th centuries. Two topical blocks will pursue ascetic ideologies as represented in the Nag Hammadi find and asceticism in monastic settlements and in circles like those led by Evagrius Ponticus. Primary goals for the seminar are: 1) developing a systematic and theoretical appreciation of asceticism as a medium of religious life and as a technology of the self 2) cultivating historical awareness of the particularity of asceticism to late antique concepts of the person 3) and concentrating on non-urban and non-elite religious texts.
