Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Kursleitung: Mary Ann Brumfield
Inhalt: This course will focus on various theories of second language acquisition and methodologies for teaching foreign languages. For the first half of the semester, students will be required to read a short chapter, article or other relevant material pertaining to these theories and teaching methodologies each week (i.e. the Oral Approach, the Sociolinguistic Approach, Communicative Language Learning, the Audiolingual Method...). These readings will be provided by the instructor. Classroom discussion will follow, focusing on practical application of the theories in the classroom. After a sound background has been established, participants will conduct their own mini-research projects into how these theories and methodologies pertain to North American high schools in comparison to foreign language instruction in Germany. Participants will be assessed on classroom discussion and preparedness, the reporting of their findings in a meaningful presentation, and a final opinion paper written in English. In addition to the main course objective of gaining a solid understanding of the different theories and methodologies in foreign language instruction and second language acquisition, participants will also learn about conducting research, giving presentations and academic writing.
