Inhalt:
With the support of the Gutenberg Lehrkolleg, the department of philosophy is offering an introductory course to American pragmatism, taught by Prof. Dr. Alain Létourneau from the University of Sherbrooke in Canada. In this course, students will be introduced and given the opportunity to read and discuss classics by Charles S. Peirce, William James, John Dewey and George H. Mead, which have recently been reinterpreted by people like Latour, Apel, Rorty and Joas. The focus of the seminar will lie on the social and political philosophy of these thinkers, which includes the idea of an open research community (science) according to Peirce, and democracy as a regulative ideal based on open discussion and communication (Dewey), without forgetting to undestand social reality as socialization and that process as an interactive process also conducive in the formation of the self (Mead). In the spirit of Peirce, students will work in a cooperative and interactive way, like a group of scientists in formation, presenting different authors and information about the historical background (turn of the 20th century) on the basis of a few texts from a corpus that will be provided. Furthermore, every student will be expected to write a term paper of up to eight pages on the topic s/he presented and a personal synthesis on a subject or one or two authors treated in the course (max. 10 pages).

The course will probably take place from April 2nd to April 13th, 2012.
