Inhalt: In this class, we will not only examine the linguistic properties of Middle English (is it really a Creole?) but also delve into its cultural and historical backgrounds. (Where does all the French come from and how does it mirror class divisions? And what happened to all those nifty Old English words?) Text excerpts will mainly be taken from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (handouts will be provided).
Empfohlene Literatur: Any good history of the English language might do for starters (but is not necessary). I suggest Charles Barber et al., The English Language: A Historical Introduction (2nd Second Edition. Cambridge University Press, 2009)
