Inhalt: Most students of English will have some previous knowledge of Early Modern English through their familiarity with one or the other play by William Shakespeare. But Early Modern English, the period of English language history from about 1500 to 1700, is more than just Shakespearean English: It is the period of the gradual standardization of the English language, witnessing two cultural revolutions: the introduction of the printing press and the Protestant Reformation; it is a period of great linguistic anxiety at the beginning and of the final triumph of English at the end; and it sees the first overseas transportation of English to the New World. It is a time of far-reaching structural changes in pronunciation, grammar, and the lexicon. This introduction to Early Modern English will place the language of the period in its historical context as varying across time, region, socially, and according to register and text types. It might as well serve as an introduction to principles and methods of (English) historical linguistics.
