Inhalt: The purpose of this course is to give a systematic introduction to pragmatics, the study of language use in context. Students will be introduced to and equipped with the fundamental concepts and terminology of pragmatic theory and analysis. After an overview of key concepts in the study of pragmatics such as speech act theory, politeness and face, we will also address issues where pragmatics overlaps and interacts with other fields of linguistic study, for example syntax and semantics (information structure), as well as cultural studies and second language learning (cross-cultural and interlanguage pragmatics). Finally, we will take a look at the emerging disciplines such as variational pragmatics (the study of intra-lingual pragmatic variation across geographical and social varieties of one language) and historical pragmatics. In the course of this seminar, students will also learn to apply a corpus-based approach to linguistic description and analysis, conduct small empirical research projects on selected features of English pragmatics, and present their (first) results in class.

[several editions available] The course will not be based on one single textbook, but key readings will be made available in the course of the semester on an electronic bookshelf on the university’s e-learning platform ILIAS.
