Inhalt: If we prescind from the fact that Archimedes, Eratosthenes, Heron, Roger Bacon, Kepler, Copernicus and Leonardo, amongst others, were empiricists avant la lettre, Francis Bacon and Hobbes were the first to provide empiricism with a theoretical foundation. While Bacon restricted himself to giving scientific method a theoretical substructure by demonstrating for true scientific knowledge the importance of induction: of verifiable hypotheses and their verification by experiment, Hobbes ranks as the founder of the philosophical school known as empiricism. We will concentrate on Hobbes magnum opus Leviathan, in the first chapters of which he outlined his philosophical approach, thereafter to expatiate on his philosophy of state, which was to exert a strong influence on autocratic rulers and totalitarian oligarchs. Time permitting, we will also discuss some of his other works such as De Libertate, his monograph against free will.
