Inhalt: After a brief overview on the invention and the history of money as well as on the astonishingly late rise of economics as a social science, we will discuss the economic and social-economic theorems and theories of the following thinkers: Bentham and the Utilitarian school of thought, Adam Smith, Robert Malthus and David Ricardo plus their influence on Marx and, conversely, how Marx’s ideas inspired the founders of the Fabian Society, who in turn prompted the foundation of the Labour Party and the Trade Unions. Following a brief excursus on Spencer and the social Darwinists and an enquiry into how far their ideas are in keeping with Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, an epitomic critique of the theories of Schumpeter and Keynes and those of Friedman and the Chicago School shall conclude our tour d’horizon.
