Inhalt: This seminar, anchored within the framework of Cognitive Linguistics, will analyze conceptualizations of space and time in English (in contrast with other languages). It will, above all, take account of the ways we use spatial concepts to understand time, and discuss which relevant concepts of time are implemented in the structure of English. Relevant linguistic realizations of space and time to be discussed will include English prepositions and their manifold meanings, verb-particle constructions (e.g., turn up, turn down, turn on), English tenses and aspect(s), space metaphors and metonymies used to make sense of abstract time, culturally divergent concepts of space and time, and the problem of the acquisition of spatial and temporal knowledge by infant and adult learners.
