Inhalt:
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the books that earned Samuel Clemens Longhorn, who used the pen name Mark Twain, his fame. At the same time, the book has been considered quite controversial because of its use of racial slurs. In fact, some schools even refrained from teaching the novel because of its language. The debate recently gained a new momentum since publisher NewSouth Books has just released a new edition in which the offensive n-word is replaced by the word "slave" (219 times!) When we talk about the book in class, we will also address the issue of language and the recent debate.

In this proseminar, we will also analyze the satire A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and the travel narrative A Tramp Abroad. Both books will show the more humorous side of Twain. This is also true for some of the short stories we will analyze; however, some of the later short stories demonstrate that Twain also had a more serious/pessimistic side. Although Twain's political essays might not be known to a wider audience, they should by no means be ignored because they show that Twain had very pronounced ideas about (American) society and American politics.
