Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Students need to purchase the following textbook until the first course session: Myra Jehlen and Michael Warner, eds. The English Literatures of America: 1500-1800. New York: Routledge, 1997. [isbn 0415908736] We will use this volume as the only textbook for the whole semester.
Inhalt: This advanced seminar investigates the literatures of colonial America. Students will be introduced to a variety of early American texts and genres (poems, sermons, autobiographies, captivity narratives, etc.) and will examine the religious, historical, political, and literary dimension of these texts. Writers include John Smith, Thomas Shepard, Anne Bradstreet, Mary Rowlandson, John Woolman, Jonathan Edwards, Phillis Wheatley, Benjamin Franklin, and others. We will also look into early Native American and African American texts and address the sociocultural situation to see how race, class, and gender informed the literatures of colonial America.
